Three Stages of Spiritual Maturity
John Paul Jackson mentioned three stages of spiritual maturity. The first is all about me and the self, the second is starting to look outward and praying for others, and the third is having God's presence in us. This is a pretty good map of many of our journeys. Most of the time in the first stage, it is all about me, asking God to bless me because I want this or that. At the second stage, we finally mature to know a bit of God's heart that He is also very concerned with other people. So we try to work / minister / intercede for them. We sometimes lose sight that it is by grace that we are saved and that we need to work and work to please God. I think it is at the last stage that we finally realize that it is all about God and not me, or even my neighbour. It is getting in on what God is doing and being where He wants us to be and not so much about what I want for myself, or to have for myself, nor even what I want for other people, but what God is doing. (Because sometimes God does not want us to do what we think we should do for others!) It is all about Him, and realizing how small my feeble effort in what I, my selfish ego, want to do!
